How to Keep Your Fridge Running Smoothly

The most common appliance that people call us about is their fridge. After all, it is the most important appliance in the home. Knowing how to keep your fridge running smoothly will help you keep your electricity bill down and extend the life of your appliance. Here are a few tips that we recommend:

Pay attention to the rubber gasket
The rubber gasket around the door of your fridge is what creates a tight seal, keeping warm air out and maintaining a cool temperature. As age begins to wear on your seals, they could weaken. With more warm air entering the refrigerator, your appliance has to work harder to maintain the temperature. Cleaning the seals periodically will prevent that they harden, crack and tear. If your door seals become wavy, just heat them up with a hair dryer and mold them back into shape so they adhere straight on the door frame. If the seals are torn, make sure to call SERVA PLUS to replace them promptly in order to prevent overburden of your compressor. You can keep your fridge running smoothly and keep your bills down easily with these simple tips.

Clean the condenser coils
The condenser coils are what ensure cooling. Without them, it’d be impossible to remove heat from inside the fridge. Since they are warm and located at the back or under the unit, it is easy for dust and other particles to collect on them. This not only lessens the performance, it puts a lot of strain on the compressor to make up for it. Cleaning the condenser coils, is as simple as pulling the fridge out, removing the grill at the bottom and cleaning the coils with a condenser brush and vacuum cleaner. You can buy a condenser brush (part #5304429018) from : http://partsinaclick.partsquik.ca/ or by phone at 1-888-474-8376.

Adjust the level
The level of your fridge actually matters a lot for efficiency. If the unit is not leveled, the doors won't close properly and some vibrations might develop. Also, you can adjust the front legs in order for the doors to close with just a little swing and prevent that they remain ajar.

Limit the prolonged openings of the doors
As you load up your fridge on your way back from doing the groceries, make sure to bring the food close to the unit and prepare the different piles so that the whole process is swift, limiting the entry of warm air. Each time you open the door, especially on a hot summer day, warm air gets inside the fridge cabinet. This warm air, on contact with cold the surfaces, will consequently produce humidity and condensation which will develop into frost and unhealthy mildew. Therefore, you should restrain from prolonged door openings while cooking and boiling food on the stove which is usually next to the fridge and also putting warm items like hot soup in the fridge or freezer.

These tips will help keep your energy bills down and extend the life of your fridge. Keeping your fridge running smoothly is as simple as a little bit of cleaning and maintenance. Preventative maintenance is always the best way to save money, so make sure you hire an experienced appliance repair company to keep your appliances running in optimum shape.

How to Maintain Your Washing Machine

How to Maintain Your Washing Machine - 5.0 out of 5 based on 1 review
How to Maintain Your Washing Machine

Washing machine and dryer installation and repair are some of our specialties at Serva Plus. We want our customers to know that there are few good things they could do at home to make sure that their washing machine lasts as long as possible. Knowing how to maintain your washing machine will not only help it work better, it will also save you money in the long run. Here are a few tips from the professionals:

Make sure that the washing machine is level

You know that annoying banging sound that some washers make when working? It doesn’t have to be that way. If it isn’t overloaded, then it’s most likely rocking because it isn’t level. Washing machine maintenance starts by giving it a good base to work on. If yours is rocking back and forth constantly, the interior could get damaged.

Get rid of obstructions and lint !

Most washing machines don’t have lint disposal problems as the lint is thoroughly drained out during the draining cycle; however, some do have obstruction filters that need to be cleaned periodically. When an obstruction blocks the filter inside the pump, the lint will therefore accumulate and prvent the lint from being eliminated. This could account for a poor wash cycle. Where your lint trap is depends on the model - clean it every regularly.

Inspect your water hoses

Water hoses on your washing machine are going to be pristine in the beginning, but over time they will deteriorate. Occasionally check yours to make sure that nothing is out of place. There could be small cracks or bulges on the hoses, that tells you they are about to burst and should be repalced. Most manufactures recommend replacing them every 5 years at most. Consider closing your faucets between loads as well.

Don’t overload it!

We know that you are in a hurry, but overloading your washing machine is a bad idea. If you want yours to last a long time, then don’t make it work too hard. All of that extra stress will start to wear it down.

Keep it clean

Over time, the soap and softener used in everyday use will accumulate between the tubs, within the pumps and on the door seal. Use periodicaly a cleaning product such as AFFRESH to clean and deodorize your washer and door seal. Using warm and hot water, depending on the load, will also prevent this accumulation. Hi Efficiency (HE) soaps like MIR and LE CHAT are also a good alternative to regular soaps. Make it a habit to dry-off you rubber door seal with a dry rag at the end of every cycle and keep the door ajar to prevent any mildew formation.

Repairing an appliance is hard work that takes a lot of experience, but some preventative maintenance checks are actually easy enough for our customers to do on their own. Repairs should always be left to appliance repair experts, but knowing how to maintain your washing machine will increase its life and ensure that it is functioning properly. Have a good wash!
3 Signs That It’s Time for Refrigerator Repairs - 5.0 out of 5 based on 1 review

3 Signs That It's Time for Refrigerator Repairs

Refrigerator repair in Montreal is one of our specialties, and we get plenty of customers around the region telling us they wish they had known the tell-tale signs of issues with their unit earlier. In fact, your fridge or freezer will tell you when something is malfunctioning; you just need to know the signs. Knowing the signals that it’s time for refrigerator repairs will help you get on top of the problem before it’s too late!

Food going bad quickly

Your fridge should be able to keep the food inside of it, fresh for a long time (depending on the product). Modern appliances are so big that it’s possible to have hundreds of dollars worth of food inside of them, so you don’t want to be wasting money. You might not notice a slight increase in temperature, but if you notice that foods are spoiling quicker than normal, then something might be wrong. If it is really warm inside the refrigerator, then it's a sure sign that a component is failing. Check the thermostat - if it is set properly then contact us as quickly as possible.

Constant leaks

When you notice leaks in and around the base of the fridge, you shouldn’t wait too long to get some help. This is one of the most common signs of issues with the appliance. When condensation is forming on the food and the inner panels and sometimes leaking, it means that something is wrong with the cooling system or the ventilation system. Our technicians can fix the issue promptly.

Warm exterior panels

If you notice the exterior of the fridge getting really hot, then it could be a sign that some inner mechanisms are failing or being overworked. You might need a cleaning, or even new parts. The only way to know for sure is have an on-site diagnostic.

The longer you wait, the higher the chance of losing all your food, needing an emergency repair or having to buy a new fridge. These 3 signs are the tell-tale signs indicating that it’s time for a maintenance or repair service on your fridge, and should not be ignored. Call Serva Plus the trusted appliance repair technicians to service your refrigerator as soon as possible.

3 Reasons why a dishwasher is better than washing dishes by hand - 5.0 out of 5 based on 1 review

3 Reasons why a dishwasher is better than washing dishes by hand

With modern appliances come conveniences that make life a lot easier. A dishwasher is perhaps the best example of this. Not too long ago, the only option was to rigorously scrub dishes to get them clean. There are plenty of reasons why a dishwasher is better than handwashing, so we thought we would cover a few. You might be surprised at some of the reasons why this modern appliance is better than the traditional way.

A dishwasher saves water!

This might seem counter-intuitive at first. A machine that washes a ton of dishes at once actually saves water? Yes, it’s true. The truth is that the majority of people leave the sink running when washing dishes - and even if they don’t, they still use more water than a dishwasher would. A study done in Bonn, Germany found that the average dishwasher lasts 1/6th the length of the average hand-washing cycle. The efficiency and water savings alone should prove our point here.

It saves soap and energy

In that same study, the university found that using a dishwasher used only half of the energy and even used less soap. This is because the machine is able to spread soap out much more efficiently that a sponge and a hand can. Premade dishwashing packets are much more efficient than squirting soap out of the bottle.

Time and convenience

This is perhaps the most obvious point: dishwashers save you time and are much more convenient. Loading and unloading might be a pain, but it is a lot easier than hand washing everything, drying it, and putting it away. While the dishwasher is working you can go do whatever you’d like.

At Serva Plus, one of our specialties is dishwasher repair and installation in and around Montreal, Laval and the South Shore, and most of our clients agree that having a dishwasher is a lot better than the alternative - provided that their dishwasher is functioning properly. You might be surprised at some of the reasons why a dishwasher is better than washing dishes by hand, but the truth is that they save you more than just time.

Extend the Life of Your Fridge & Freezer

Extend the Life of your Fridge & Freezer

When you buy a fridge / freezer you want it to last as long as possible. Buying an appliance from a reliable manufacturer is one of the first steps. With a quality appliance, you know that if you treat it well, it will last long.

How do you treat an appliance well? Sometimes proper appliance care is not as obvious as one might think.

Installation :

It is important to have your fridge installed properly to prevent problems later on. Do your floors tilt or rest on a slant? Old wood houses and apartments can have a lot of character, but if your fridge or stove is not resting straight, it will have to work extra hard. A tilt will cause the door to stay open a crack, which will make the compressor work extra hard to maintain the temperature. Over time, this will cause a strain on your fridge or freezer that will shorten its life.

There are many problems that are connected to improper appliance installation. It is best to have your appliance installed by a professional. We can also connect the water supply for the ice maker and water dispenser of your fridge and provide you with filters as well, all for a fraction of the cost of a professional plumber.

The Advantages of Electric Stoves

The Advantages of Electric Stoves - 5.0 out of 5 based on 1 review

The advantages of electric stoves

banner 10

Here at Serva Plus, we repair and install a wide selection of electrical appliances for your home that can make your life safer, cleaner, and easier. Many people still operate using gas stoves, and while there is nothing wrong with that, the advantages of electrical stoves are too hard to ignore. Upgrading your home’s appliances will not only give it a better look and feel, it will also increase its value. Here is why you should from gas to electric today.

 It’s cleaner

Anyone who has kept the gas open for just a few seconds knows that smell that it produces. The gas gets into the air, creates a fire hazard, and can even be harmful to breathe in. While it takes large amounts to make a dent, if you don’t have proper ventilation in the area, then you will notice that the quality of air in your home will decline. An electric stove is not only cleaner to breathe, it is cleaner to run.

It’s easier to clean

Perhaps the biggest drawback of gas appliances is that they often create a big mess and are very difficult to clean. The grime and leftovers fall into the burner and it’s difficult to reach in between all of the burners and rails. A full cleaning requires taking the grate off, taking the burner off, and cleaning everything before putting it all back together again. An electrical appliance will have a flat top that you can quickly spray and wipe clean. It saves time and saves you the headache of dealing with it.

It cooks evenly and easier

Not only will an electric stovetop and oven have more functions than a gas one, it will also cook more evenly. There won’t be any gaps in the flame, and the flat surface means a more even distribution of heat across the pan. You can just press a button and set it to whatever you would like the oven to do, and then wait for it to heat up. A gas counterpart will often not distribute the heat properly, and baking in the oven will require more monitoring and work. With electricity, it’s all done for you.

Even though an electric stove will cost you a little bit more in terms of energy, since you will only use it a few hours a week, you won’t notice any major differences in energy bills. What you will notice, however, is that it will cook more evenly and be far more convenient to clean. No matter if you own a gas stove or an electric range call the leading appliance service company in Montreal for all your repair and installation needs!

Whirlpool’s refrigerators: French Door Vs. Side-By-Side

We have come a long way from the insulated “ice box” of the 1950s.  Refrigerator technology has become very efficient in both energy usage and use of space in door shelving.  When choosing a refrigerator for your home, you can pick between multiple different layouts for your refrigerator that ultimately all have the same outside dimensions and simply use the space inside of them differently.  Two of the most common layouts for refrigerators these days are the French Door and The Side-By-Side.

Electric vs. Gas Stoves

Electric vs. Gas Stoves

Cooking with gas and cooking with electricity can each have their values and drawbacks.  It is important to take into account both options when looking for a new stove.  Most of what you eat will be prepared on your new stove, so picking the type of appliance that is right for you should not be taken lightly.

Cooking with Gas Appliances

A gas stove like the Samsung Cooktop stove can have lots of capacity, plenty of room for different elements, and will heat up faster than a stove with electrical elements.  There is a reason the old expression ‘now you’re cooking with gas’ is so applicable to so many situations, and a reason why professional chefs in kitchens across the world cook with exclusively gas stoves and ovens.  With a gas stove from a supplier like Viking, KitchenAid or Frigidaire, your meals will be made faster without question, and get your delicious creations on the table in no time.

Cooking with Electrical Appliances

Electrical stoves and ovens could very well be a little lighter on your wallet in both monthly costs and in initial pricing of the hardware.  Though electrical stoves and ovens do not heat up as quickly in comparison to gas stoves and ovens, they are far easier to clean and very safe to do so – especially when working with a glass-topped electric stove where burnt food and residue comes off with minimal effort, given the right cleaning supplies.

Electrical stoves, ovens and appliances like those offered by Kenmore, Hotpoint, and Magic Chef, are perfect for the chef at home who wants the peace of mind of never having to remember to turn off the gas for their kitchen appliances.

Both gas stoves and ovens and electrical stoves and ovens have their merits and either type of appliance would make an excellent addition to any home.  The right cooking appliances can make the difference between an average meal and an exceptional one.  Take some time to figure out which is right for you – and happy cooking! Serva Plus repairs and install gas and electric cooking appliances.
